Physcos is the ancient name for Marmaris which was on the important Anatolian-Rhodes-Egyptian trade route. Ionians had first settled in the old quarter in 3400 B.C. and had given the name of 'Physcos' to this spectacular place. Ionians were traders and the main reason why they had chosen this location was because of the naturally protected harbor setting. They built the castle overlooking the bay and settled there.

Physcos was ruled by Alexander the great in the forth century B.C, whom renovated the existing castle for his own needs.

In 1552, Suleyman the magnificent had strengthened the castle after his capture in order to conquer the Island of Rhodes. After six months of battle with the English crusaders, he took over the Island and deported them to Malta. Suleyman the Magnificent was the person to change the name of Physcos to its name of today..
