Physcos is the ancient name for Marmaris which was on the important
Anatolian-Rhodes-Egyptian trade route. Ionians had first settled in
the old quarter in 3400 B.C. and had given the name of 'Physcos' to
this spectacular place. Ionians were traders and the main reason why
they had chosen this location was because of the naturally protected
harbor setting. They built the castle overlooking the bay and settled
there.
Physcos was ruled by Alexander the great in the forth century B.C,
whom renovated the existing castle for his own needs.
In 1552, Suleyman the magnificent had strengthened the castle after
his capture in order to conquer the Island of Rhodes. After six
months of battle with the English crusaders, he took over the Island
and deported them to Malta. Suleyman the Magnificent was the person
to change the name of Physcos to its name of today..
Marmaris is one of the most attractive natural harbors backed by the
rugged pine-clad mountains with an elegant palm lined promenade
leading to a busy marina, splendid beaches and a crystal clear smooth
sea which is ideal for water sports and sailing.
Marmaris is one of the most beautiful resorts of the Aegean region
and leading yachting center of the East Mediterranean. Among Turks,
it is known as ''Green Marmaris'' because of its landscape that is
covered with rare pine forests.
The bay of Marmaris is a very protected natural port with deep draft
piers for ships and several marinas for hundreds of yachts from all
over the world.
The town has many modern tourist facilities, unspoiled natural
beauties and moreover the people of Marmaris always warmly welcome
both the foreign and the local visitors.
